Value Lab
Upload a reference, simplify the values, sample tones, and export a study image.
Judge value before measuring it
Choose a cube, estimate its value on the 0–10 scale, then use comparison only when you need it.
Select a cube, then click the value you think it matches.
Which centre square has the lighter value?
Choose an area, estimate it on the scale, then check all four values together.
Need a comparison? Drag the selected cube across the scale. Its matching value will respond when you reach it.
Lab Instructions
- Upload your reference image or a photograph of your drawing.
- Start with 3 values to identify the large light, middle and dark masses.
- Move to 5 values when you need halftones and accent darks.
- Sample areas of the image and compare them against the value scale.
- Export a simplified value map and use it as a drawing reference.
Teaching point Value structure comes before surface detail. A clear arrangement of a few large value masses usually reads more convincingly than many carefully copied small variations.
